Dear New York, I miss you already.

We’ve only been back for a week, but if I could hop on a plane and go to NYC today, I’d do it in a heartbeat. We had the best trip, y’all. We didn’t do a lot of tourist stuff- I didn’t lay eyes on the 9/11 site, the Brooklyn Bridge {one of my favorite things in NYC} or the Statue of Liberty. But boy, did we shop. And eat. And relax. I feel like we “lived” the city and I fell even more in love than I already was. I’ll try to keep the recap short, but I have a lot to tell!

We arrived on Monday night just in time for The Killers concert. If you know us, you know we are HUGE fans. The concert was not on our plan until the week before we left, when they announced they were doing a concert at a small venue in NYC. We had to change our flights and say lots of prayers that we’d even be able to get tickets. Thank goodness for the fast typing of the AMEX guy, because he is who got us the tickets that sold out in less than 15 seconds. Seriously. It was meant to be!

The concert was at Webster Hall, a really cool venue that had lots of rooms for different concerts. We got in line and waited for the doors to open at 8. There were no actual tickets- your name was just on “the list”. It was all just such a different experience than any concert we’ve attended. There were roughly 1,200 people there, and we were just a few feet away from the stage. They sang all of their great older songs, plus four new songs on their new album coming out in the fall. Everyone there was a major Killers fan like us, so everyone was singing every word to every song, and everyone was SO excited. We had such a great night and that started off our NYC trip with a bang!

We stayed at the Ritz Carlton Central Park {for free, with our Marriott Points that we’d saved for three years!}. It was beautiful and the perfect location. The first picture was the view from our room. The hotel was next to The Plaza Hotel, which is one of my favorite buildings in New York {growing up watching Home Alone 2 with my sisters, we all have a love for The Plaza!}. On Tuesday we started our morning walking to Viand’s, a fun little coffee shop on the Upper East Side. We walked through Central Park, making our way to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We loved the MET. We’d been there before and we say we’ll go every time we’re in NYC. It is just so unbelievable to see paintings by Picasso and Rembrandt and O’Keeffe and Chagall. I loved, loved our morning there. Then we walked through Central Park some more and had a late lunch at Shake Shack. {Background- we first heard of Shake Shack in a movie, then T went to one for the first time in DC. He came home saying it was the best burger/shake/fries combo ever, and last December I got to try it out. I totally agree with him, so we were so excited to make plans to go to Shake Shack not once, but twice on our trip to NYC! It really is the best.} After Shake Shack we spent the afternoon shopping on the Upper East Side.

That night we headed to Chinatown for some tasty hand-pulled noodles at a place called Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles. Ha! Oh my word, so good. It was a total hole-in-the-wall and we had been warned not to let them sit you in the basement, but the yumminess of the food {and homemade chili sauce} outweighed the sketchiness for sure. I would love to find a place like that in Dallas. Wednesday morning we got up and ran around Central Park. I needed to run 7.5 miles sometime that week to stay on my marathon training schedule, so we took full advantage of the 67 degree weather and the beautiful atmosphere. This was another highlight of the trip for me. It didn’t feel like 7.5 miles because we were running in Central Park for goodness sakes! After our run we headed out for day two of shopping. We went down Fifth Avenue and to Rockefeller Center and shopped. All. Day. Well, we stopped for lunch at The Burger Joint, a little dive inside the Parker Meridien Hotel that was just so good. We spent the majority of our afternoon at UNIQLO, a new-to-us store that is a lot like H&M but more organized and less chaotic. We were there for two hours, folks! I found some great deals on clothes for the fall and walked out with eight cute things for $150. Seriously, that’s a good deal! We’re hoping their clothes hold up better than H&M, but we will see.  After a full day of shopping we headed to dinner at Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain. Perfect atmosphere and amazing food made for another great date night in NYC!

Are you hungry yet??? Yes, we ate our way through the city! On Thursday morning we headed down to SoHo and had breakfast at Clinton Street Baking Company. That’s my sausage biscuit with homemade tomato jam. YUM. Then we shopped all morning in SoHo, and I found the deal of the trip. I’d been looking for white jeans all week, hoping to get them on sale since it’s late in the season. I found some marked down at the Anthropologie on 5th but they didn’t have my size. Well, they did have them at the one in SoHo and they were marked down even more- they were $168 and I got them for $60. Yes!  After shopping we ate at The Meatball Shop for a late lunch. Oh, it was another amazing meal! And see below- we had homemade cookie sandwiches for dessert. Mine was Snickerdoodle with Brown Sugar ice cream.

Thursday night we headed to Times Square for the first time of this trip. We saw Wicked and it was just perfect. I loved it and must say that if you’re ever in NYC, you have to go see it. I loved the music, the stage, all of it!

Friday morning was our anniversary. After snapping a picture in front of Tiffany’s, we grabbed a muffin from a local bakery and went to Bryant Park. It’s another one of my favorite spots and we just sat and enjoyed the beautiful view of the Empire State Building! Then we walked to Rockefeller Center and watched Kathy Lee and Hoda from the Today Show… it was so fun seeing them since I watch it every day. We spent the rest of the morning in the Flatiron District, shopping and sight-seeing. Then we ate lunch at…. Shake Shack!! This location was the one in the movie Something Borrowed. It was so good, again.

We were starting to get worn out, so we decided to go back to the hotel, grab our books, and walk to Central Park. We sat on a bench in the Literary Walk and read and talked. A guy playing the sax sat down across from us, and it was just perfect. He ended up playing the song we danced to on our wedding day, which made the moment even more special! We had plans that night for dinner at Gramercy Tavern. It was such a special night. Our dinner took over 3 hours- we just enjoyed every bit of it. The food was incredible and we just talked and reflected over our last 10 years!

The next morning, before our flight home, we met some friends for breakfast! Bret and Lisa had arrived for their getaway in NYC the day before and it was so fun having breakfast with them. Then it was time to pack up and head home. We were ready to see the kids but we were sad our fun trip was over! I can’t wait to go back!

Ten.

I Love New York.

I’m leaving on a jet plane, don’t know when I’ll be back again…

Oh wait, it’s not a jet plane, it’s American Airlines. And I’ll be back Saturday. But in just a few hours T and I will be walking the streets of NYC!

I’ve always said “I was meant to be a New Yorker.” I know that’s silly but that is just how much I love the city! This will be my fourth trip to NYC. I don’t have any digital pics of my previous trips because, sadly, they were all before digital cameras and cell phone cameras were around! But, here’s a quick recap for ya!

NYC Trip #1- New Years Eve 1999. Yes, I was there. In Times Square, for the Millennium. Y’all. Best New Year’s EVER. My amazing and generous sis took her little sis {a poor sophomore in college!} and my oldest sister and her husband to New York so we could ring in the new year together. This trip holds such special memories for me! I will never forget standing for ELEVEN hours WITHOUT a bathroom in the FREEZING cold just to see the ball drop. And it was worth every minute. We also took a trip to the top of the World Trade Center, and on September 11, 2001, that memory became much more meaningful. It was an awesome trip and I knew I’d be back!

NYC Trip #2- May 2002. My sister took me to New York for my college graduation present. Yes, I have the best sister and no you can’t have her! This trip is when I truly fell in love with the city. We walked in Central Park, stayed in the heart of Times Square, ate prosciutto and arugula sandwiches in SoHo, shopped in Chinatown, and went to see Beauty and the Beast on Broadway. We grew up watching the movie together and that made my first Broadway experience even more special! We also saw lots of famous people on this trip- we saw Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant filming Two Weeks Notice, saw Lisa Kudrow and Robert De Niro being interviewed by Ann Curry, and saw ALL of the Friends cast at an event at NBC studios. It was just a perfect week!

NYC Trip #3- July 2003. This was my first trip to NYC with Trey! His good friend from college and his wife moved to New York just after they got married, so we were able to go visit them for a week. It was fun to explore the city with great friends who lived there and knew what they were doing! We did so much that week but the highlights include seeing Phantom of the Opera, eating at Tavern on the Green, and major shopping in SoHo. Again, an amazing trip and so special because Trey loved the city, too. I knew that we’d be back but I knew it would probably be a long time from then…

and now that time has come!

We have a relaxing and fun week planned to celebrate our TEN years of marriage in one of our favorite places ever. A concert, Broadway, Central Park, the MET, lots of shopping, and Shake Shack are a few things on the list for us to do, but I just can’t wait to get away for a whole week with my man! NYC Trip #4- July 2012. Here we come!

Oh how I love to shop.

And guess where I get to shop for FIVE straight days with no kids??? None other than NYC! We leave in a month and I am so excited! Yes, we are planning on doing a few other things that don’t involve shopping, but man am I ready to hit 5th avenue and Soho! So, here’s a little huge list of things I’ve got my eye on. We’ve been planning this trip for a while, and we are staying for free {Marriott rewards points = sweet hook up at the Ritz!} and flying for free {thank you to Trey’s company for all of those airline miles he’s racked up to and from DC}. So, that leaves our budget for mainly shopping and eating!

New York Shopping List

Clearly I won’t be buying all of this! It’s just a list to help me prioritize, otherwise I’ll spend all of my budget on the first day! I’ve been eyeing a new pair of white jeans for a while now. That gold watch has been tried on many, many times. Oh and the flats, too. After traveling to the beach I realized I need a fun makeup bag. The mint-y striped tank is from Uniqlo- a new-to-us store we can’t wait to check out. And the coffee mug- I always buy a coffee mug on vacation to add to my collection. I broke my last Jonathan Adler one not too long ago, so I’ll be looking for a replacement. The wrap bracelet- I just love it! The Kate Spade earrings would be a nice happy-anniversary-to-me if I do say so myself. And, I’ve always wanted a cashmere sweatshirt {y’all know how much I love my sweatshirts}. So, we’ll see what I end up buying, but it sure has been fun browsing online and making a wish list for NYC! The countdown is on!

Our Anniversary.

We’ve been married 9 years! I feel old. Did I already mention that? Here are a few highlights of our celebration(s):

Date night at Five-Sixty. Amazing view. Great sushi. Hot date ;) Thanks, Bebe, for coming in town to keep the kids!

Anniversary

Beautiful flowers= Happy me!

We put these two crazies to bed early so we could enjoy homemade pizza along with chips & salsa on our actual anniversary (what we ordered from room service on our wedding night).  Then we watched Roman Holiday, in hopes that we may be seeing the sights {of Rome} next year.

In lieu of actual presents, we shopped the Nordstrom anniversary sale, where I bought….

new running shoes. wahoo.

Actually, I did surprise T with Aggie season football tickets {they’re for his birthday too}. Jenn and I just said adios to our husbands for SEVEN Saturdays this fall. But they have been waiting a long time for those tickets and they deserve it! According to them, this is the year we are going to win the National Championship. But they say that every year. I hope they are right this time!

That reminds me, Aggie football starts real soon. It’s my favorite time of the year. Whoop!

My huckleberry friend.

9 years ago today I made the second best decision of my life. I married my {then} best friend who is still my favorite person in the world. He makes me laugh more than anyone. He sees my yucky side {a lot} and still thinks I’m lovely.  He spoils me with his sweet words and fun surprises. He leads our family by seeking the Lord first. I am one lucky girl.

Moon River is hands down my favorite song of all times.  Shout out to Jami for introducing it to me when I was probably 15. I sing it to my kids almost every night, because it makes for a great lullaby. Besides being known for helping the kids fall asleep, I have always thought it was romantic. Beautiful. Makes me think of my man and the life we are living together.

“Two drifters off to see the world
There’s such a lot of world to see
We’re after the same rainbow’s end
Waitin’ round the bend
My Huckleberry friend
Moon River and me.”

Audrey Hepburn singing it in Breakfast at Tiffany’s will always be my number one, but this version almost takes the cake.

This one is for you, T. Happy Anniversary to my one and only. Wherever you’re going, I’m going your way.

P.S. I showed this to T a couple of weeks ago. The FIRST thing that pops out of his mouth as the song starts is “Hey, that microphone is made out of a Mag Lite!” So romantic. Just keepin’ it real, folks!

Lots of reasons to celebrate!

>This weekend I was in my friend Jessica’s wedding, we celebrated our 6th anniversary, and Chloe turned 5 months! What a weekend! We enjoyed our road trip to South Texas where we enjoyed good food at the Gristmill, took Chloe to Gruene Hall, witnessed two wonderful people start their new life together, shopped ’till we (literally) dropped in San Marcos to celebrate our anniversary, and even got stuck in traffic on I35 for over an hour on the way home. Fun times! Through the good and bad, this trip was a much needed get-away and we had a great time! Here are some pictures to re-cap our adventure!

Yes, I “have a baby…in a bar!” (anyone know where that quote comes from?) Don’t worry, we just took pictures and left!

Isn’t she the cutest 5 month old in the world? I think so!

Jessica the beautiful bride! Right now they are in NYC on their honeymoon, I am jealous!

Congrats, Jessica!

>

My good friend Jessica got engaged this weekend! Whoohoo! I am so excited for her. They have set the date for July 26, 2008, a day before our 6th wedding anniversary. How fun it will be to spend our anniversary celebrating with Nick and Jessica as they say “I do”!

5 Years

>

On July 27, we celebrated our 5 year anniversary! I can’t believe it has been that long! We celebrated by staying at the new W Hotel in downtown Dallas. We had a great weekend eating at all of our favorites and some new places (including, but not limited to, Houston’s, Nine, Breadwinners, Campisi’s, and Sprinkles). Yes, we both gained at least 5 pounds but it was worth it! The W Hotel is in a league of it’s own. It is the hip, modern, place-to-be-seen in the Big D. The room was very different from what we’re used to, but the experience was incredible. Our favorite part of the evening was going up to Ghostbar and seeing the view of the Dallas skyline! It was beautiful and we just had a great time visiting with each other. It is so fun being married to my best friend. I am thankful for Trey and our marriage every day!
